So what if I told you the first fully evolved Pokémon ever put in the Pokédex spent thirty years being the one you never had to look at?

This is Venusaur. Number three in the Pokédex. That puts it ahead of Charizard, ahead of Blastoise, ahead of every final evolution that came after it. When Game Freak wrote the list, this was the very first fully evolved Pokémon on it. And most of the world barely got a look at it.

Be honest. 

When was the last time you actually looked at Venusaur? Not Bulbasaur, but, Venusaur. The finished version. Because for years, the franchise made it easy not to.

Start with the cover. In Japan, Venusaur was on the box of Pokémon Green. When the games went to the rest of the world, they only brought Red and Blue. Charizard and Blastoise went on every shelf on the planet. Venusaur's box stayed in Japan for eight years.

And here's the wild part that held true for YEARS

If you picked Charmander in the original games, Venusaur did not exist in your world. Your rival took Squirtle, nobody else in Kanto had one, and you could beat the entire game without seeing it once. It was in there the whole time. You just never got to meet it.
