So what if I told you there's a Pokémon that has never once stopped smiling, and the only way to know it's hurting is to look behind it?

This is Wynaut. 

Look at its face. That smile is there when it's eating. It's there when it's fighting. It's there when it's asleep.

You will never, in its entire life, catch it without one. And people take that at face value. They think it's fine, because it looks, well... fine, because it's always looked happy and content.

But it actually isn't always fine. 

If you want to know what Wynaut is actually feeling, don't look at the smile. Look at the TAIL. 

When it's angry, when it's had enough, when something is wrong, the face doesn't change at all. The tail comes down and slaps the ground. That's it. That's Wynaut's whole tell. A little black tail hitting the dirt while the face above it keeps smiling at you.

And here's the thing about how it gets strong. 

Wynaut can't throw a punch. It doesn't learn a single attack of its own. Not one. Everything Wynaut knows how to do is take a hit and give it back. Somebody has to hurt it first. Then it returns exactly what it was given. And it trains for that by squeezing in with the others on moonlit nights, pressed up against each other in a cave, taking the pressure, getting tougher, learning to hold it and hand it back.

So think about what kind of thing that is. A Pokémon that can't strike first. That only ever answers. That smiles through all of it and only lets it show in a place most people never look.

You know someone like that. Maybe you are someone like that. The one everyone assumes is okay, because you always look okay, because you never hit first, because the only sign is something small you do when you think nobody's watching.
