## Transcript

What if I told you this Pokémon has never seen its family's faces, and yet it still finds them in the pitch black every night?

This is Zubat.

It has no eyes, and its skin is so thin that sunlight burns it. So it spends the day hanging upside down in caves and under the roofs of old houses, and when the sun goes down, it flies.

To get around in the dark, it calls out and listens for what bounces back. That's how it knows where the walls are and where it's going.

Its Pokédex says every colony's call sounds a little different. So in the dark, with every bat in the cave calling at once, a Zubat can still pick out its own family by sound.

Real bats work the same way. Scientists found baby bats grow up sounding like the colony they're raised in, more than like their own moms.

Then morning comes, and the whole colony piles together to keep each other warm until dark.

This Halloween, kids are going to be out after dark in costumes, and a few of them will be dressed as bats. 

They'll go door to door until they can barely see the end of the street. And at some point, somebody's going to step out onto a porch and yell a name in the one voice that kid would know anywhere.

If it's the full name, middle name and all, that kid already knows they're in trouble.

Maybe there's a voice you'd still turn around for in a crowded store, even now. Maybe these days you're the one on the porch, and somebody small knows exactly what you sound like.

Zubat can't see a thing out there, and it still makes it home every night, because it knows what its family sounds like.
