Background

Who they are.

Misty is one of four siblings who collectively run the Cerulean City Gym; her three older sisters (Daisy, Violet, Lily) call themselves The Sensational Sisters and treat Misty as the runt. She debuts in EP001 fishing at a riverbank where she reels in Ash, Pikachu, and Spearow trouble. Pikachu fries her bicycle; she chases Ash through three regions ostensibly to extract repayment, but the actual reason is she found a friend group worth keeping. Raises Togepi from an egg Ash found in Grandpa Canyon. Specializes in water-types and harbors a phobia of Bug-types that the show plays for laughs across her entire tenure.

Leaves the main cast in EP272 to take over as full-time Cerulean Gym Leader when her sisters depart on a world tour. Re-appears for the Mirage Kingdom arc (catches Azurill in AG056), the Wallace Cup (AG053-AG054), several Pokémon Chronicles episodes, and the Aim to Be a Pokémon Master epilogue (PM004-PM011). Her competence as a Gym Leader is treated as established canon; multiple visiting trainers acknowledge her ranking.

Misty's character function evolved across her run. In Indigo League she's the snarky audience proxy who calls Ash an idiot when the writing needs an idiot called out. By the Aim to Be a Pokémon Master epilogue she's a peer; the trio dynamic with Brock and Ash plays as three adults catching up on a friend group that never really dissolved.

Legacy

Why this character mattered.

Misty defined the "tomboy in a Pokémon adventure" archetype for the better part of a decade. Her Togepi was one of the first canonical egg-hatch arcs in any Pokémon media. The shipping fandom (Pokeshipping) is one of the longest-running in anime.
