Game Freak's first Switch 2 mainline pair. Sky and sea. A starter trio that broke every fan prediction (a chick, a puppy, a gecko), version-paired Pikachu companions, and an orchestral main theme by the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo. Out 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2.
Dropped Feb 27, 2026 on @officialpokemon. First look at the starters, the Pikachu pair, the world, and the orchestral theme.
Game Freak broke pattern on all three. No mammal-snake combo this time. A bean-chick, a puppy with pom-poms, and a gecko. The grass / fire / water triangle holds; the silhouettes don't.
A small bean-bird starter. Cocoa-toned plumage, leaf-shoot crest, alert posture in every promotional shot.
A fluffy fire puppy. Pom-pom mane and tail tufts that glow when it gets excited. Designed to read as approachable, not aggressive.
A blue-green gecko with a fin-like tail. Sticky-toed climber. The water starter Pokémon fans expected to be a frog finally is a gecko instead.
Each title ships with its own unique Pikachu companion: Mr. Windychu in Winds, Ms. Wavychu in Waves. Not regional forms; distinct, story-paired Pokémon. The first time the franchise has version-exclusive Pikachu variants of this scale.
A wind-themed Pikachu paired with Pokémon Winds. Cape-like fur ruffle. Not a regional form, a unique companion Pokémon for that title.
A wave-themed Pikachu paired with Pokémon Waves. Tide-swept tail, droplet motif. The Pokémon Company sidestepping the usual version-exclusive expectation.
On May 13, 2026, The Pokémon Company released a behind-the-scenes featurette of the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo recording the main theme. Two-and-a-half months after the announcement trailer, the studio doubled down on the cinematic posture.

Browt (Grass, Bean Chick Pokémon), Pombon (Fire, Puppy Pokémon), and Gecqua (Water, Water Gecko Pokémon). All three are completely new species and not regional variants of existing starters.
Version-paired Pikachu variants. Mr. Windychu appears in Pokémon Winds; Ms. Wavychu in Pokémon Waves. They're not regional forms in the Galar / Alola sense. They're distinct, story-paired companion Pokémon, marking the first time the franchise has shipped version-exclusive Pikachu variants at this scale.
Not yet revealed. The trailer deliberately withheld them. Expect a second trailer or Pokémon Presents broadcast through 2026 to handle the legendary reveal; the title pair (Winds and Waves) implies a sky-coded / sea-coded legendary pair.
Yes. Winds and Waves is the franchise's tenth mainline generation, the first since 2022's Scarlet and Violet (Gen 9) and the first ever to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
No. Switch 2 is the confirmed platform. Pokémon Champions (the cross-platform competitive sim) is the current option if you want post-launch Pokémon on the original Switch.
Not officially confirmed. Every mainline Pokémon since Gen 8 (Sword and Shield, 2019) has integrated with Pokémon HOME within a year of launch. Expect Winds and Waves to follow.
