Background
Who they are.
Friede is the show's adult presence. Captain of the Rising Volt Tacklers and a former member of the Pokémon Survey Corps, he's the closest the Horizons cast has to a mentor / parent figure. His character design intentionally evokes a young adult researcher rather than a senior commander; he's competent without being authoritarian. The crew operates on consensus and Friede's authority is earned, not asserted.
His partners include Captain Pikachu (a distinct individual from Ash's Pikachu, with its own gear and battle style), a Mega-capable Charizard, and a hidden Mew named Cap that he carries in a private Poké Ball and seldom reveals. The Mew partnership ties him into the Project Mew lineage from Journeys without overtly referencing that arc. By Season 3 (Rising Hope) Friede's history with the Pokémon Survey Corps is explored more deeply; his connection to Diana (Liko's grandmother) and the original Brave Olivine crew gets developed.

Legacy
Why this character mattered.
First adult full-time main-cast member in the mainline series. The dynamic of capable adults treating younger leads as peers is a tonal shift the franchise had never quite committed to.
