Background

Who they are.

Goh is the franchise's first true co-protagonist. He and Ash meet on a Project Mew encounter in JN001 and become roommates / fellow Research Fellows under Professor Cerise in Vermilion City. Goh's defining ambition: catch every Pokémon, and specifically, eventually meet Mew. He partners with Scorbunny in episode one and the catch counter climbs steadily from there. By the Ultimate Journeys finale his catch count exceeds 250 unique species, including Suicune, Regieleki, and Lugia.

The Goh-Ash dynamic is the show's most equal friendship pairing. Goh treats Ash as a peer rather than a senior; the show treats them as parallel protagonists rather than mentor / student. Goh's arc resolves with his admission to Project Mew (he passes the trial by demonstrating he understands the bond, not by catching Mew literally). His final canonical appearance is in the Aim to Be a Pokémon Master epilogue (PM011).
