Generation IX: Paldea.
Paldea is the Iberian generation, modeled after Spain and Portugal. School-based plot, a mascot rival, and the most explicit acknowledgment yet that the player is a kid (you literally enroll at Naranja or Uva Academy). The Scarlet / Violet DLC pair (The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk) released in 2023.
The mechanic that defined Gen IX
Open world, three independent storylines, Terastallization.
Scarlet and Violet ship as a true open-world Pokémon RPG. You can attempt the gyms, Titan hunts, and Team Star bases in any order. Terastallization is the new battle mechanic: once per battle a Pokémon swaps its type to its 'Tera type', which can be any of the 18 types and dramatically rewires team-building.
Signature moves introduced this generation: Tera Blast, Fillet Away, Make It Rain, Last Respects, Population Bomb.

Legacy
Gen 9 is the open-world pivot. Terastallization redefined competitive play overnight (every Pokémon now has 18 possible defensive postures). The Pokédex completed crosses 1,025 species, all in a single mainline pair for the first time since Gen 5. Performance issues at launch were real, but the design ceiling that Paldea set is the new baseline. Pokémon Legends: Z-A extended the era in 2025 with a Lumiose-City-only adventure that restored Mega Evolution as the marquee mechanic.
