Generation VII: Alola.
Alola is the Hawaii vacation. Bright colors, a slower pace, an explicit story about leaving home as a kid, and a postgame full of Ultra Beasts (inter-dimensional weirdoes that read like SCP entries). Lillie's arc is the most-cited emotional payoff in any mainline Pokémon story.
The mechanic that defined Gen VII
Z-Moves, regional forms, and Island Trials replace gyms.
Gen 7 retired the eight-gym structure for an Island Trials format with Totem Pokémon (oversized, aura-buffed encounters). Z-Moves were once-per-battle ultimate attacks tied to a held crystal. Alolan regional forms made existing Pokémon part of the new dex, kicking off the regional-variant trend that every later generation continued.
Signature moves introduced this generation: Sunsteel Strike, Moongeist Beam, Photon Geyser, Spirit Shackle, First Impression.

Legacy
Gen 7 is the generation that proved Pokémon could change its structure. Replacing gyms with trials, introducing the Ultra Beast subseries, and shipping a true Necrozma three-form arc with Ultra Sun and Moon, all of it widened the design space. Regional variants alone are now a permanent part of the franchise.
