0:05Everybody knows Voltorb as the troll.
0:08The fake Poké Ball sitting on the ground that you reach down to grab, and it blows up in your face.
0:11But look a little closer, because the games keep dropping the same hint over and over.
0:14Start with the Pokédex.
0:16More than one entry says, straight up, that Voltorb was first discovered right when Poké Balls were invented, and that there is "some connection" between the two.
0:19Another one goes further and says Voltorb may have been created when a Poké Ball got hit with a powerful surge of energy.
0:22The games are telling you, in their own words, that this thing showed up the exact moment Poké Balls did.
0:25Then when Pokémon Legends Arceus came out, set hundreds of years in the past it introduced Hisuian Voltorb.
0:27And that's where things start getting REALLY interesting.
0:30Back then, Poké Balls were not metal.
0:33They were carved out of Apricorns, this woodgrain, hand-made fruit.
0:35And Hisuian Voltorb is made of woodgrain, with a hole in the top, packed full of seeds.
0:38It looks exactly like the Poké Balls of its own era.
0:41The modern one looks like a modern ball.
0:44The ancient one looks like an ancient one.
0:46It matches whatever a Poké Ball looks like in that time period.
0:49So for decades the theory has been the same.
0:52Voltorb is a Poké Ball that woke up.
0:55But here is what keeps it a real argument and not a solved case.
0:57In the ancient past, Voltorb was already there.
1:00So which one came first?
1:03Did a Poké Ball come to life and turn into Voltorb?
1:05Or did people see Voltorb, and build the Poké Ball to look like it?
1:08Nobody has ever answered that.
1:11And if it is a Poké Ball that woke up, that means something dark.

1:16And the only thing it ever learned to do is blow itself up.
