Why it matters

The first Legends to revisit a city, not a wilderness.

Legends: Arceus (2022) set the template: a single past-era region, action-battles in the overworld, a smaller dex focused on lore. Z-A inverted the formula: instead of pre-modern wilderness, the entire game takes place inside one rebuilt contemporary city. Lumiose was Pokémon's most-aspirational location since X/Y in 2013, and the rebuild gives every district its own vertical battle-arena identity.

The mechanical pivot is Mega Evolution as the only transformation system. No Z-Moves, no Dynamax, no Terastallization, just Megas. Gen 6 stones return with an expanded roster (canonically, the Mega Evolution Plan re-runs across the city). Competitive players have rebuilt their teams around the limited-but-deep Mega pool.

The Mega roster

Iconic Megas return.

All Gen 6 Megas are in. Several Gen 7+ Megas were added in Z-A as the Plan re-discovered stones for newer species. Six of the franchise's strongest competitive picks below.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Is Z-A a mainline Pokémon game?

It's a Legends-series spinoff (like Legends: Arceus), so it sits adjacent to the Gen 9 mainline pair (Scarlet & Violet) rather than replacing them. Generation-wise it's grouped with Gen 9-era content.

Do I need to have played Pokémon X or Y first?

No. Z-A is set in a rebuilt contemporary Lumiose with its own self-contained story. References to the X/Y events exist but the game is designed as a standalone entry.

Does it work with Pokémon HOME?

Yes. HOME integration shipped within the launch window. You can transfer compatible species in and out, with Mega availability depending on the destination game.

What are the Ranked Battle seasons?

Ranked Battles are online seasons that last three weeks each. Season 1 started on launch day, October 16, 2025. Some seasons change the rules, such as which Pokémon you are allowed to use. Seasons give out items as rewards, such as Mega Stones and Bottle Caps.

What's the relationship to Pokémon Winds & Waves?

None directly. Z-A is the Gen 9-era Legends spinoff continuing to receive content updates; Winds & Waves is the upcoming Gen 10 mainline pair on Switch 2 in 2027. Both can co-exist.
