Onix.
As it grows, the stone portions of its body harden to become similar to a diamond, but colored black.

0:00What if I told you the first giant you ever met has spent the last thirty years slowly turning into a black diamond.
0:03This is Onix.
0:06And for millions of us, it was the first truly enormous thing we ever saw in a game.
0:08Pewter City.
0:11Your starter's barely level 12.
0:14And Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader sends out a roaring tower of boulders that can barely fit on the screen.
0:17Up until that moment, Pokémon were cute little animals that followed you around.
0:20Onix was the one that showed you this world had giants in it.
0:23And then everybody just moves on.
0:25Beat the gym, get the badge, and Onix becomes "the first gym" for the rest of time.
0:28Nobody ever stops to learn what this thing's life actually is.
0:31Which is a shame, because its lore is one of the sweetest in the whole Pokédex.
0:34Onix spends its life underground, tunneling through solid rock at fifty miles an hour.
0:37It has an actual magnet inside its brain that works like a compass, so no matter how deep it goes, no matter how dark it gets down there, it always knows its way.
0:39And as it digs, it absorbs the hard things it tunnels through into its own body.
0:42The work is literally what builds it.
0:45And it gets better.
0:48The Pokédex says that as Onix grows old, its body doesn't break down.
0:51It gets rounder, and smoother, and harder, year after year, until all that rough gray rock becomes something like black diamond.
0:53A whole lifetime of grinding through stone in the dark, and it comes out the other end polished.
0:56The years don't wear Onix down.
0:59They finish it.
1:02And then there's the detail that gets people.
1:05The tunnels Onix leaves behind don't just sit there empty.
1:08Diglett move in.
1:10Whole little lives get built inside the paths it carved.
1:13Onix never sees any of it.
1:16It's already miles away, still digging.
1:19It just spends its whole life quietly making room for everybody coming behind it.
1:22So today the big guy gets his flowers.
1:24Onix was never anybody's favorite, and it's never trending, and it deserves so much better than being a badge you got when you were eight.
1:27Show it some love in the comments, and tell everybody your first Onix memory!
A physical wall. 160 Defense dares you to swing.
Onix's base stat total is 385. The shape of a stat spread tells you everything about a Pokémon's role. Tanks lean defense, sweepers lean speed and attack.
