0:09It has no eyes, and its skin is so thin that sunlight burns it.

0:14So it spends the day hanging upside down in caves and under the roofs of old houses, and when the sun goes down, it flies.

0:18To get around in the dark, it calls out and listens for what bounces back.

0:23That's how it knows where the walls are and where it's going.

0:27Its Pokédex says every colony's call sounds a little different.

0:31So in the dark, with every bat in the cave calling at once, a Zubat can still pick out its own family by sound.

0:36Real bats work the same way.

0:41Scientists found baby bats grow up sounding like the colony they're raised in, more than like their own moms.

0:45Then morning comes, and the whole colony piles together to keep each other warm until dark.

0:50This Halloween, kids are going to be out after dark in costumes, and a few of them will be dressed as bats.

0:54They'll go door to door until they can barely see the end of the street.

0:59And at some point, somebody's going to step out onto a porch and yell a name in the one voice that kid would know anywhere.

1:03If it's the full name, middle name and all, that kid already knows they're in trouble.

1:12Maybe these days you're the one on the porch, and somebody small knows exactly what you sound like.

1:17Zubat can't see a thing out there, and it still makes it home every night, because it knows what its family sounds like.
