TCG Pocket: a first-week playbook.
New to Pokémon TCG Pocket? Here's the five-minute primer. How packs work, what to spend hourglasses on, the cheapest meta decks to build first, and the common mistakes that waste your stamina. Deck picks from tournament decklists up to Oct 14, 2026.
The five rules every new player needs.
- Two free packs per day. You get one pack every 12 hours from Pack Hourglasses. The day's Wonder Pick is on top of that. Spend Hourglasses as they come; they regenerate while you hoard.
- Focus on ONE pack in ONE set. Deluxe Pack: Mega (B4b, the current set) has one pack. Older sets like Genetic Apex (A1) split across Charizard / Mewtwo / Pikachu packs. Pick the pack with the cards you actually want and concentrate; Pocket picks finds it for you.
- Decks are 20 cards, max 2 with the same name. You pick up to 3 Energy types when you build the deck, and the game hands out one Energy each turn. Energy cards are not in the 20-card pile.
- Pack Points are your safety net. Every pack you open earns 5 Pack Points. Once you hit a card's listed Pack Point cost, you can directly buy that card without praying for a pull. Use this for the last 1-2 missing cards in a deck.
- Battle daily for quest rewards. Quests give cosmetics, more Pack Points, and the occasional pack. Even losing battles count for some quests. Skip a day and you fall behind.

Open guide →Six mistakes that waste your stamina.
1. Hoarding Pack Hourglasses.
The cap is 60 (5 packs worth). Past that, regenerating Hourglasses are wasted. Open packs as Hourglasses appear unless you're within 24 hours of a new set drop.
2. Opening multiple packs across all sets.
Spreading dilutes your pull rate. Pick a single pack (one set, one pack-type within the set) until you complete a target deck.
3. Spending stamina on Wonder Picks that don't matter.
Always claim the free daily Wonder Pick. Skip every additional one unless the pool contains a card you specifically need.
4. Forgetting Pack Points exist.
Every pack earns 5 Pack Points. You can directly buy any card at its listed cost. Use this for the last 1-2 cards you can't pull.
5. Building "fun" decks before a meta deck.
Build ONE tier-list deck first. Once that's done, branch into pet decks. Trying to build five decks at once means you complete zero.
6. Ignoring battle quests.
Quests are the single best free-pack source after dailies. Battle one round per day even if you lose; many quests reward participation, not victories.
Common questions.
How does TCG Pocket actually work for a new player?
You get two free packs per day (one every 12 hours, regenerated via "Pack Hourglasses"). Pick a set, pick a pack within that set, open it, build decks from what you pull. Decks are 20 cards, with at most 2 cards of the same name. You pick up to 3 Energy types, and the game hands out one Energy each turn. The game gives you a daily Wonder Pick draw on top of your packs. See our /tcg/pocket/wonder-pick page for whether each active pool is worth your stamina.
What's the cheapest meta deck a new player can build?
Of the decks winning tournaments now, Mega Altaria ex / Espeon needs the fewest ◆◆◆◆ or rarer cards: 1 in the list we show. It is 9.86% of tournament decklists and wins 46.02% of its games.
Should I save Pack Hourglasses or spend them?
Spend them. Pack Hourglasses regenerate over time; hoarding them is wasted stamina. The exception is the day before a new set releases: save 4-5 packs worth so you can open the new set on day one.
What is Wonder Pick and should I do it daily?
Wonder Pick is a daily mini-draw: someone else opens a pack, the cards get shuffled face-down, and you pick one for a stamina cost. Always do the free first Wonder Pick of the day. After that, only spend additional stamina if the pool contains a chase you actually want. Most pools are not worth it.
Do I need to spend money to be competitive?
No. Free-to-play players can reach the top ladder. The grind is real: expect 3-4 weeks before you have enough cards to build a fully-meta deck. The fastest path is to focus on one pack within one set (do not spread across all packs) until you complete a tier-list deck.
