Ash's Hoenn-era run. Following Game Freak's Gen III reset, the anime resets with him: Pikachu is briefly depowered, the badge system gets a new region, and Coordinator culture gets introduced as a parallel competitive track to gym battles. May, the daughter of Petalburg Gym Leader Norman, and her younger brother Max travel with Ash; Brock rejoins after Orange Islands. The Battle Frontier arc returns the cast to Kanto for the show's first full-region victory lap, with Ash facing seven Frontier Brains across the original Kanto map. The art style modernizes; mode shifts toward longer set-piece episodes; Contests pad out the format with an entire alternate competitive structure that the games never quite matched on screen.
